Frontera Taco Skillet Sauce- Weekend Cooking

My husband and I used to own a fast food Mexican restaurant, so we've eaten many tacos over the years. When we ran our local CYO program, we'd buy a 12pack of tacos from Taco Bell and we'd enjoy lunch together every Sunday before we opened the gym. (We'd sold our restaurant by that time.)

So I have many fond memories of Mexican food, and yet, when it came to making tacos at home, I just couldn't find a decent recipe that everyone liked. My husband enjoyed the Ortega taco seasoning packet, but I found it tasted rather flat. And every time he would ask me to make tacos, I would cringe.

Now I've found something that really makes my tacos taste terrific- Frontera Taco Skillet Sauce. Chef Rick Bayless, who owns the famous Frontera Grill in Chicago, has packaged his own brand of taco seasoning sauce, and it is what I've been looking for for a long time.

I tried the Texas Skillet Sauce, which has cumin and red chile sauce. It really tasted fresh and rich, as opposed to the powder-y tasting taco seasoning packets. There are three other flavors, Key Lime Cilantro, Chipotle Garlic, and New Mexico, as well as many other sauce and seasoning products that can be found on the website here.

My husband loves it too, so now we'll be able to have tacos that we both enjoy, thanks to Rick Bayless.

  1. I'll have to look into this. Years ago I gave up on the grocery store packets and started making my own seasoning blends based on recipes I've found in books and online. Thanks for the heads-up on Bayless's brand.

  2. I didn't know about these! We are big Rick Bayless fans! Thanks for the hot tip(!) BTW, that is cool you guys used to own a taco place. I am an urban planner, but I used to own a body shop :)

    1. Body shop owner to urban planner- that is a very interesting journey! Being a business owner is hard work, but I think you get an invaluable education from it.

  3. You guys used to own a fast food Mexican restaurant?! Wow.. a lot of work, I bet. Glad you found a taco seasoning you both like!

I haven't really found any new products at the store lately. It seems I "drop" a product more frequently than picking up a new one these days.

Oh wait! I discovered the Pomegranate Dressing made by Marzetti several months ago. It's in the refrigerator case in the produce aisle near the salads. I love this dressing ... but am trying to make my own version so I can control and or skip the added sugar.

    1. I love Pomegranate anything, so I will look for that. I'm hooked on Bolthouse Farms Tropical Mango Dressing, I love to use it on shrimp mango salad.

    2. That's so funny that you mention the Bolthouse Tropical Mango dressing--I almost bought it last week!! I even had it in my hands. I was tempted to break away from my usual Pomegranate.. but ended up getting the Pomegranate like usual. haha!

  5. I've had other Frontera products that I loved so I will be on the lookout for this! Looks great. Love Mexican. So cool you owned a taco place!
My newest find was a lime vinegar and a tomato vinegar, both excellent. The tomato was different but so good.

  6. I'll be looking for this next time I'm in Wegman's ... which is probably just a matter of hours away. Can't even begin to imagine all the work involved in running your own restaurant. How long did you do that?

    1. My husband owned a restaurant on Marshall on the SU hill for 5 years, and we owned one in the Fingerlakes Mall in Auburn for almost 10 years. It's like having another child- a 24-hour-a-day responsibility.

  7. In my mind, Rick Bayless can do no wrong. Although I've never used any of his packaged products, I've used countless recipes of his...so I'm positive I'd like these. I'm going to make a point of picking up one or two next time I see them!

  8. I love Mexican food, but it's not as popular down here in New Zealand. It's easier to find a Thai, chinese or Indian restaurant than a Mexican one.

We tend to make most stuff from scratch, but hubby did buy some excellent Dukkah mix. It was delicious with olive oil and fresh bread.

  9. I guess I'm in a group of one. I thought this stuff was flat out awful. Tasteless bland boring not a hint of cilantro or lime in mine. I was shocked and disappointed.
