Hypnotized By Love by Sariah Wilson

Hypnotized By Love by Sraiah Wilson
Published by Montlake ISBN 9781662514227
Trade paperback, $16.99, 283 pages

Sariah Wilson's latest rom-com Hypnotized by Love has a protagonist with a unique occupation- Savannah Sinclair practices hypnosis therapy. People come to Savannah for help with anxiety, sleep issues, and more.

As the story opens, Savannah has been censured by the Florida Board of Professional Hypnotists. When a patient came to her office, Savannah felt that something was not quite right and offered to refer him to another hypnotist. This man pursued Savannah romantically and when she demurred, he went online and left bad reviews and eventually filed a complaint stating that she was pursuing him romantically.

This hurt Savannah's business and her confidence. Her twin sister Sierra, an ER nurse, and their friend Bridget are doing their best to cheer Savannah up at a restaurant when in walks Mason Beckett, the guy who broke Savannah's heart in high school and who spread rumors about her that left her devastated.

Mason is a successful writer, and his parents and Savannah's have been best friends forever. The two families spent all their time together. He is the last person Savannah wants to see today.

It turns out that Mason is writing a magazine piece about hypnotherapy and he booked an appointment with Savannah under a different name. Savannah wants nothing to do with Mason, but when his mom asks her to see him as a favor, she relents. She will see him once, but when their session is interrupted before Savannah can bring him out of his trance by a fire in the building, a problem ensues.

Mason turns on the charm, but Savannah wants nothing to do with him romantically, and after the censure incident, has to be very careful not to be seen as anything but professional with Mason. But this is a rom-com, so we know that things will turn romantic.

Hypnotized By Love is a quick and enjoyable read, and I loved the clever banter between Savannah and Mason and Savannah and her twin sister Sierra. There are a lot of humorous quips that had me laughing. I found the hypnosis angle intriguing and different. Sariah Wilson manages to make the usual rom-com tropes refreshing with her witty writing and characters. Hypnotized By Love was a perfect plane read.

The Secrets of Still Waters Chasm by Patricia Crisafulli

The Secrets of Still Water Chasm by Patricia Crisafulli
Published by Woodhall Press ISBN 9781954907645
Trade paperback, $19.95, 220 pages

Librarians these days have to deal with many challenges- budget cuts, crumbling buildings, people who want to ban books, governments passing laws that are unrealistic (and unconstitutional) among them. Ohnita Harbor librarian Gabriela Domenici has to deal with even more dangerous situations in Patricia Crisafulli's second book in her Ohnita Harbor Mysteries series, The Secrets of Still Waters Chasm.

In the first book in the series, The Secrets of Ohnita Harbor, Gabriela discovered a dead body and was nearly killed by the head of the library board of directors as he tried to steal a valuable relic donated to the library.

In the new book, Gabriela understandably suffers from anxiety from her near-death experience. When she and her boyfriend Daniel are out hiking a trail in the nearby Still Waters Chasm in the Adirondack Mountains, they come across some huge construction vehicles but no one around. It  looks like the trucks may be drilling deep underground on the public land, but for what reason?

On their way out of the park, they stumble upon a man and a woman and an overturned canoe. The woman is dead, and while they attempt CPR on the man, he appears dead as well. With foam coming out of their mouths, could they have eaten something poisonous?

Gabriela and Daniel move around to try and get a cell phone signal and call the police. When the police arrive and Gabriela and Daniel take them to the bodies, the bodies and the kayak are gone.

So now Gabriela is involved in another mystery. She also attempts to help Wendy, a young woman who inherited an antique drawing of what appears to be some type of early sail. The young woman wants to sell the antique to get away from an abusive boyfriend, and Gabriela, a research expert, promises to help her discover the worth of her drawing.

She also befriends Lucinda, an herbalist with an expertise in plants and their healing properties. There are people in town who do not like Lucinda, they call her a witch and believe she poisons people.

Daniel is unhappy that Gabriela is getting involved with people and situations that could be trouble for her. She is still fragile from her last experience.

Crisafulli based Ohnita Harbor on the city of Oswego in Central New York, a place where I attended college, and anyone who lives in the area will recognize the castle library where Gabriela works. I like how she works in interesting topics- fracking, inventor Robert Fulton, library politics- that enlighten the reader.

I enjoyed getting reacquainted with characters from the first book, like Gabriela's fiesty Italian mom Agnese and the staff of the library, but you need not have read the first book to enjoy this one. The mystery kept me turning the pages and I admit to holding my breath at the end.

Crisafulli's The Secrets of Still Water Chasm is a fast-paced mystery that elevates the genre with great characters and a fascinating setting.  I'm looking forward to a third book in the series.

My Name Is Iris by Brando Skyhorse

My Name Is Iris  by Brando Skyhorse
Published by Avid Reader Press ISBN 9781982177850
Hardcover, $28, 257 pages

One of  the best things fiction can do is create empathy on the reader. Brando Skyhorse's new novel, My Name Is Iris does that masterfully.

Iris Prince is a second-generation Mexican-American. She has a good job, a young daughter she loves, and she is getting a drama-free divorce from her husband. Iris and nine-year-old Mel are moving into a new home in a nice neighborhood.

Iris's mother has always taught her to follow the rules to living in  America- speak English in front of strangers, walk far from gringos on a sidewalk until they acknowledge you, call them "sir or ma'am", and never ever cry in front of anyone. Iris always tries to follow the rules.

But suddenly the rules were changing. A company created "the Band", something a person wears on their wrist that had their identity on it. You would use this band to get a drivers license, pay your utility bills, basically anything you need to do, you need the Band to be able to do it.

In order to get a Band, you have to show proof of not only your citizenship, but also of your parents' United States citizenship.  This is something Iris in unable to do, and her life was shrinking because of it.  Eventually, the government required employers to prove their employees each had a Band.

While the Band was becoming a part of American life, Iris notices a wall in front of her house. This wall appears to be growing, and no one else seems to be concerned or even acknowledges that it is there. Her neighbors (who are all white and pepper Iris with microagressions in each encounter) and even her ex-husband make no mention of this huge wall growing in front of Iris' home.

Iris doesn't understand what is happening. She has always followed the rules, she believes that if she works hard and raises her daughter to work hard, she will be justly rewarded with a good life. But now those rules mean nothing.

Brando Skyhorse has created a character in Iris Prince who is unforgettable. The reader has empathy for a woman who is doing everything right only to be told that it doesn't matter, it only matters where your parents came from. My Name Is Iris is such a timely and relevant novel, a great companion to Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. I found myself shaking my head in disbelief and yet also thinking that this is something that frighteningly could be a reality. I give My Name Is Iris my highest recommendation, it is truly a superb piece of fiction.
