Weekend Cooking- A Trip to the Lower East Side

This post is part of Beth Fish Reads' Weekend Cooking.  If you have anything related to food, cookbook reviews, novel or non-fiction book reviews, recipes, movie reviews, etc., head over to Beth Fish Reads and add your post. Or, if you want to read food related posts, head over to read what some interesting people have to say about food.

Last Sunday, my husband and I took a long walk from our home on the Upper East Side of New York City to the Lower East Side. We ended up at the intersection of 1st Ave. and 1st Street, or what Kramer from Seinfeld calls it- 'the nexus of the universe'.

We've been in NYC for eight years and never eaten at the world-famous Katz's Deli, so we stopped in for lunch. The place was crowded, as always, filled with a mix of tourists and neighborhood people. When you walk in, you're given a blue ticket by a smiling big man working the door like a club bouncer.

You can either put your name in for table service or join the multiple lines at the deli counter. We split up, I found us two seats at a four seat table, and my husband stood in Cutter Line #7 to place our order. Luckily, we had our cell phones, so he called me to coordinate our order.

We split a huge Reuben sandwich, along with an order of fries and two Pepsis. When you place your oder, you give the counter person your blue tickets, which they mark with your order for the cashier.

The sandwich was good, but I'm not as big a fan of corned beef as my husband. He actually prefers the corned beef at the 2nd Ave. Deli, which is right around the corner from our apartment.

The walls of the deli have hundreds of pictures of famous people who have eaten there- politicians (Bill Clinton, Rudy Guiliani), actors (Leo DiCaprio, Dan Ackroyd from his SNL days) and more (OJ Simpson). And for some reason, there seemed to be dozens of photos of Mike Bloomberg. Everywhere you looked was another photo of Mike Bloomberg, taken over many years, so it looked like a Mike Bloomberg scrapbook.

There are a few men wheeling big carts around to pick up the trays and trash, they just keep circling, which I found interesting. When you finish, you pay (cash only) at the register, giving the cashier your blue ticket. Our order came to $35 for what was essentially one person for lunch. So it's on the pricy end.

We popped in across the street at il laboratorio del gelato for a gelato treat. The place is all white and sterile looking, just like a lab (hence the name), and the staff were busy providing samples (two per person) to people at the counter.

I chose a small dish of salted caramel (their most popular) and vanilla gelato and it was so creamy and flavorful. My husband had a small mint chocolate chip (delicious) and peanut butter (bland).

We ate our gelato and wandered over to Tompkins Square Park where we found a musical group called The Meetles playing Beatles songs, and sat for a bit enjoying the music. We passed people with strollers and dogs, and apparently there is a street hockey league that plays some serious games on Sunday too.

After wandering about awhile, we decided that we needed to do this more often, just walk around parts of the city we don't spend much time in because it's a big city with a lot to see.

Weekend Cooking- Cookbooks at BEA

This post is part of Beth Fish Reads' Weekend Cooking.  If you have anything related to food, cookbook reviews, novel or non-fiction book reviews, recipes, movie reviews, etc., head over to Beth Fish Reads and add your post. Or, if you want to read food related posts, head over to read what some interesting people have to say about food.

This week was the annual Book Expo of America (BEA), a conference that brings together publishers, booksellers, librarians, and bloggers to discuss all things bookish. This was my seventh visit to the show and I saw some wonderful friends and made some new ones.

As usual, my first post about the BEA is a roundup of food books that I link to Beth Fish Reads Weekend Cooking meme. This year, I got some terrific complete cookbooks, two of them giveaways at the Penguin Canada booth.
Foodie books from BEA

When I make my monthly trip to Costco, I always pick up at least one of their $4.99 rotisserie chickens, so I was excited to grab a copy of Eric Akis' The Great Rotisserie Chicken Cookbook.  There's over 100 recipes for storebought and homecooked chicken and I know I will using this one frequently.

Michael Smith's Family Meals is the other book I got at Penguin Canada. I have one other of his cookbooks, and my family loves the Buffalo Chicken Salad recipe that I make from that one, so I'm looking forward to finding some more recipes from him here.

Katie Lee was signing her newest Endless Summer Cookbook at the Abrams booth. My husband and I enjoy her Logan County Hamburger recipes, and this book looks like a perfect one to break out for summer gatherings.

Reader's Digest was once again giving away the latest edition of The Taste of Home Cookbook, a favorite among home cooks because it is filled with the best recipes from people just like us.

For those who love their cocktails, Food & Wine Cocktails 2015 has 150 recipes for classic and new drinks from the best bartenders around the country. Cheers!

I also picked up three foodie books-a memoir titled The Raging Skillet by Rossi, an NYC chef who tells her story of growing up in a Jersey Shore Orthodox Jewish family and her climb to working in some of New York's grittiest kitchens before opening up her own restaurant.

I also got two fiction books about food- Jessica Tom's Food Whore, a novel about a woman who ghostwrites reviews for a New York food critic and J. Ryan Stradal's Kitchens of the Great Midwest, a much buzzed about debut novel that I cannot wait to read.

Over the next few weeks I will be sharing other books I got, authors I met and panel discussions I attended from BEA. Did you find any good cookbooks at BEA this year?

Weekend Cooking- New Summer Recipes

This post is part of Beth Fish Reads' Weekend Cooking.  If you have anything related to food, cookbook reviews, novel or non-fiction book reviews, recipes, movie reviews, etc., head over to Beth Fish Reads and add your post. Or, if you want to read food related posts, head over to read what some interesting people have to say about food.

Although we have been visiting many of the restaurants in our neighborhood, I did try a few new recipes recently, and not one of them was a clunker. (My usual rate is one of three for new recipes that didn't work out.) And since it's summer, no one wants to be stuck in the kitchen, so these three were easy and light.

We like chicken thighs, so this one of chicken baked with white wine, garlic and herbs sounded so easy  that it was no coincidence it comes from the Simply Delicious website. You just fry bone-in chicken thighs in an oven proof skillet, add some garlic, wine, herbs and a touch of cream and then bake in the oven for 15 minutes. So easy and tasty, this is something you can whip up on a week night.

From Simply Delicious

I also tried Barefoot Contessa's Linguine With Shrimp Scampi, which is perfect for a hot summer evening. It's so light and refreshing, and Ina Garten's recipes are always full of fresh flavor. I even had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. I like to use fresh linguine from Agata & Valentina, a local Italian grocer.

From Food Network

On the night I made the scampi, I tried Oven Roasted Corn. I had never roasted corn on the cob, but it turned out great. I liked it quite much, but my dining companions turned their noses up at it. I guess they are traditional when it comes to corn on the cob- boiled in a pot of water on the stove. Next time, I may try it boiled in milk, another Pinterest idea I saw.

Next I'm looking for recipes for our trip back home. Anyone have ideas for appetizers or desserts? Share them in comments below.
